Project
Goals
|
Improving farmers' lives and the environmentThe overall project objective was to sustainably improve the livelihoods of Ivorian cocoa growers. Farmers were encouraged to apply methods of sustainable agriculture according to an internationally accepted standard (the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard).
The project built on the premise that strong organisational structures of cocoa farmers and the application of improved agricultural and management practices are beneficial for the farmers, their families, and the environment. Sustainable production practices, including social issues, were disseminated. The PPDC farms were being certified by the Rainforest Alliance and farmers received a premium for their cocoa beans, which were purchased by Armajaro on behalf of Kraft Foods. The farmers also followed the quality and traceability parameters developed by the ICCO (International Cocoa Organization). Inspiring international discussions on best practicesThe importance of finding ways to continue producing cocoa sustainably is the subject of ongoing global discussions. Sustainability requires well-planned and coordinated efforts by the entire cocoa industry, from producers to processors and consumers. Beyond the interventions at farmer and cooperative level, the project analysed and shared experiences and results obtained under sustainable cocoa production in Côte d'Ivoire. Internationally, this project is often referred to as a lighthouse for sustainable and certified cocoa production. | |
